- The new Ayia Napa kindergarten opened its doors on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the government’s initiative to enhance preschool education across Cyprus.
During the inauguration, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou highlighted that preschool education lays the essential foundation for a robust educational system and is crucial for every child’s development. “The first years of each and every one of our lives are of exceptional importance for the next stages of our journey,” she stated, underscoring that these formative years shape the overall development of young individuals.
In alignment with this vision, the education ministry has rolled out a comprehensive plan aimed at elevating early childhood education throughout the country. A pivotal aspect of this strategy is the gradual introduction of compulsory education from the age of four, which represents a significant advancement in the nation’s educational framework.
Michaelidou elaborated that the initiative seeks to ensure equitable access to high-quality early education for all children, irrespective of their socio-economic backgrounds. To realise this ambition, the ministry is committing resources to enhance infrastructure, provide staff training, and implement child-centred teaching methods tailored to meet the diverse needs of each child.
The new kindergarten is designed to be a well-equipped, modern facility that supports creative and effective learning environments. Upgrades and new facilities are being developed to further enrich the educational experience, while the curriculum is being revised to incorporate contemporary pedagogical principles. This aims to better prepare children for primary school while nurturing their skills and abilities.
Recognising the multicultural and multilingual nature of Cyprus’ student population, particularly in Ayia Napa, the ministry is implementing targeted support measures for children who are not native Greek speakers. This effort reflects a commitment to inclusivity and the integration of diverse backgrounds within the educational system.
Michaelidou expressed her hope that the new kindergarten would serve as a model of social care and a hub of knowledge and healthy development for children. She affirmed that it would offer quality education through a thoughtful pedagogical process, enabling young learners to take their initial steps toward teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.
