About the Junior Balkan Olympiad
The Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics is an annual event that invites talented secondary school students from across the Balkans to compete in programming challenges. Each participating country sends a delegation of young programmers who face off against one another by solving complex algorithmic problems. The competition adheres to the same rigorous standards as the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), ensuring that participants are tested against high benchmarks.
Participating Countries and Competition Format
For the 2025 edition, it is anticipated that delegations from ten countries will take part. The event will feature two days of intense competition, complemented by cultural excursions and activities designed to allow participants to experience Cyprus’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and unique culinary traditions. The Opening Ceremony is set for Saturday, October 25, followed by the Closing Ceremony and Medal Awarding on Wednesday, October 29.
Cyprus’s Achievements in Informatics
Cyprus has built a commendable reputation in the realm of international informatics competitions. In 2024, Cypriot teams garnered seven medals and three honourable mentions at various international Olympiads. More recently, in 2025, the country achieved significant success by winning a gold medal at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) and securing two bronze medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Bolivia.
Community and Educational Impact
“Hosting the Junior Balkan Olympiad in Informatics is a great honour for Cyprus. It highlights our commitment to nurturing young talent in digital skills, programming, and innovation, while also showcasing Cyprus as a hub for education and technology in the region,” stated Mr Andreas Loutsios, Vice-Chairman of the Cyprus Computer Society. His words reflect the broader aspirations of the CCS to foster a supportive environment for young programmers and to encourage educational exchange.
Looking Forward to a Week of Learning and Exchange
The CCS is keen to welcome all delegations to Cyprus and is looking forward to a week filled with learning, competition, and intercultural exchange. The organisers are committed to ensuring that the event is not only a test of skills but also an opportunity for young minds to connect, share ideas, and build friendships that transcend borders.
