As the island marks 51 years since the 1974 invasion, discussions emphasised the need for increased international involvement in resolving the conflict. Education Minister Athena Michaelidou reaffirmed the government’s commitment to negotiations aimed at addressing the Cyprus problem.
Cyprus division: Commitment to Negotiation
Michaelidou stated, “We do not forget. We do not compromise,” underscoring the emotional weight of the situation. She described the occupation as “a wound, a memory that hurts, but also a hope that persists.”
Highlighting the government’s proactive stance, she noted that President Nikos Christodoulides is collaborating with international partners to relaunch talks founded on United Nations resolutions, European Union laws, and international principles.
A Vision for the Future
Michaelidou articulated a vision for a “truly independent state, free from occupying armies, outdated guarantees and foreign interventions.” This aspiration resonated with the overseas Cypriots in attendance, who gathered from various regions including Europe and the United States.
Calls for Accountability
The conference attendees collectively urged Turkey to comply with European Court of Human Rights rulings and to provide clarity regarding missing persons from the conflict. Their resolution reflects a unified front among the diaspora, eager to support Cyprus’ ongoing struggle for reunification.
International Support
The importance of international partnerships was also a key focus. British Deputy High Commissioner Adam Sambrook hosted UK delegates at his residence, reiterating London’s commitment to its relationship with Cyprus. His comments highlighted the desire for collaborative efforts towards resolving the island’s division.
