Marilia’s dedication is evident in her daily routine. Waking up at dawn, she ensures that Shelby and Monahan are well taken care of, feeding them and allowing them to graze freely. This commitment comes with challenges, especially given the unique needs of racehorses. “They’re extremely scaredy,” she explains, noting that both horses have specific care requirements that not everyone is equipped to handle.
The differences in their personalities reflect their racing backgrounds. Shelby, who suffered a leg injury that ended his racing career, is well-adjusted and enjoys rides with Marilia. However, Monahan exhibits anxiety and fear, likely stemming from a harsher upbringing. “Monahan is like a little kid,” Marilia observes, highlighting his struggles with noise and sudden movements. She has adapted her behaviour to help him feel safe, understanding that riding may not be suitable for him at this stage.
Marilia’s journey with Monahan has been particularly instructive. After a distressing incident where Monahan injured himself, she realised that her priority is providing a peaceful, stress-free life for him instead of forcing him into situations that cause anxiety. “I just want him to live a happy, stress-free life,” she asserts, and her efforts are paying off as he becomes calmer in her care.

Despite the emotional toll of rescuing horses, Marilia finds great satisfaction in her work. “It gives me great fulfilment to know I gave these horses a second chance,” she says. The bond with Shelby and Monahan has brought her immense joy, making her dream of horse ownership a reality. She also highlights the lack of proper veterinary services, criticising the tendency to consider euthanasia as a first option rather than exploring treatment possibilities.
