Lagoudera gorge: Emergency Call Initiates Rescue
At 15:10, the Fire Service received a call for assistance regarding the two 18-year-old males. They reported losing their way while walking on a mountain path near the Lagoudera Community, leading them to become trapped in a gorge.
Challenges in Reaching the Trapped Individuals
The Nicosia Fire Stations quickly mobilised rescue teams and vehicles to assist. The Fire Service Call Management Centre has maintained continuous contact with the trapped individuals, providing updates on their situation.
Upon assessment, authorities discovered that the young men were in a steep area far from any road access. The terrain required a climb of several hours, prompting a request for assistance from the Police Air Wing (MAEP) helicopter.
Helicopter Attempts Foiled by Terrain
Simultaneously, the Fire Service’s EMAK (Disaster Response Special Unit) dispatched a special rescue team to the scene. Although the MAEP helicopter attempted to approach the location, the rugged terrain and dense vegetation forced it to withdraw after several unsuccessful attempts.
Ground Teams Make Progress
Members of the Nicosia Fire Stations and the EMAK team are now progressing along the path the young men were using. They plan to descend into the gorge using rappelling techniques to reach the trapped individuals. The team is also carrying clothing to provide to the young men once they are located.
An update on the rescue operation will be provided once the situation concludes.
