On Tuesday, these individuals were informed that they would need to vacate their accommodation, a decision that Kisa condemned as inhumane. The organisation expressed anger on Friday, highlighting the dire situation now facing the migrants who have been described as victims of exploitation.
In response to the sudden termination of support, Kisa was left with no choice but to convert part of its offices into a temporary dormitory. However, the organisation emphasised that this space is entirely unsuitable for residential use. “Under these inhumane circumstances, Kisa was forced to temporarily convert part of its offices into a dormitory so that these individuals would not be left sleeping on the streets,” they stated.
The 23 individuals are part of a larger group of 50 migrants who had reportedly been deceived by a private employment agency and its associates in Limassol. Kisa explained that the migrants arrived in Cyprus burdened by significant debt, only to discover that their wages, employment conditions, and accommodation arrangements were not as promised.
While Kisa has stepped in to provide temporary shelter, it also noted a critical issue: the migrants are not permitted to work until they find new eligible employers. As a result, they lack the means to rent accommodation or meet their basic needs, including food.
Kisa’s statement underscored the urgency of the situation, warning that the social welfare services department appeared ready to “throw” these migrants onto the streets. Despite attempts by the Cyprus Mail to contact the social welfare services department for a response, no comment was received.
