During a ceremony in Ayia Napa, Environment Minister Maria Panayiotou highlighted this recognition as a testament to the collective efforts of government bodies, local authorities, and environmental organisations in maintaining the quality of the island’s bathing waters. Out of 123 bathing water areas assessed, nearly half have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag.
Celebrating Environmental Success
Panayiotou stated that Cyprus’ beaches are an integral part of the island’s identity, cherished by both locals and visitors. “Behind the beauty of Cyprus’ coastline lies the quality of its bathing waters, which has been maintained through our concerted efforts,” she remarked.
She also noted that Cyprus has ranked first in Europe for bathing water quality in the European Commission’s evaluations for the past three years. This achievement, according to Panayiotou, is not the result of any one organisation but rather a collaborative effort across various entities dedicated to environmental protection and public health.
The Importance of the Blue Flag
The Blue Flag is widely recognised as an international symbol of quality for beaches and marinas. It is awarded to those that meet stringent environmental and operational criteria. Panayiotou emphasised that the award not only recognises clean and well-maintained beaches but also encompasses a broader environmental culture that includes management, safety, organisation, and responsible coastal operations.

Criteria for Awarding the Blue Flag
To qualify for the Blue Flag, beaches must demonstrate excellent bathing water quality and comply with 33 criteria, while marinas need to meet 38 criteria, all aligned with European standards. Panayiotou expressed confidence that Cyprus would continue to excel in maintaining high quality standards for its bathing waters.
