Chicken à la crème has been blamed for a mass food poisoning incident that affected over 70 guests at a wedding reception in Limassol. Among those affected, 21 individuals, including children, were hospitalised as health authorities launched an investigation into the alarming situation.
The wedding took place on May 31, and symptoms began to emerge shortly after the reception. The Ministry of Health’s Health Services promptly initiated a thorough investigation following reports of illness. Initial testing has indicated the potential presence of salmonella, although the Head of Health Services, Irodotos Irodotou, emphasised that these findings are preliminary and require confirmation from the State General Laboratory, with results anticipated in the coming days.
“Some patients exhibited symptoms very shortly after eating, suggesting the involvement of a toxin-producing bacterium like staphylococcus,” Irodotou noted, highlighting the need for caution as authorities continue their investigation. They have not dismissed either possibility at this stage.
Of the more than 70 guests who reported illness, 39 hailed from Limassol while approximately 35 were from Paphos. The situation remains serious, with 21 individuals currently receiving treatment in hospitals, and estimates indicate that the actual number of affected guests could be even higher. Notably, three guests from the Paphos contingent also required hospitalisation due to their symptoms.
Irodotou urged anyone who attended the wedding and is experiencing symptoms to reach out to their local Health Services office for advice and assessment. This appeal underlines the urgency of the situation as health officials strive to control the outbreak.
In addition to the immediate investigation, authorities are looking into whether the same venue is responsible for a similar food poisoning incident that occurred the previous Saturday, when food was also prepared there. “Upon being alerted, we acted swiftly,” Irodotou explained, revealing that the couple who hosted the wedding reported that approximately 50 attendees had shown symptoms from the outset.
“We immediately launched investigations and began conducting personal interviews with the affected guests. An on-site inspection was carried out, food samples were taken, and the premises where the food was prepared have been suspended for several days,” he added, reflecting the comprehensive approach being taken by health officials.
