Cyprus tourism: Challenges Facing the Tourism Sector
As the industry grapples with these challenges, Angelides pointed out that hotels operating year-round have already suffered losses during the critical months of March, April, and May. He remarked, “Unfortunately, losses for the year so far appear to be around 20 per cent – a huge number that cannot be shrugged off.”
Seeking Financial Support
In light of these difficulties, the industry has appealed to the European Union for financial assistance. Angelides stated, “This is something we have requested and continue to request, and we hope it will eventually materialise.” He emphasised that conflicts in the Middle East have had a direct and detrimental impact on Cyprus, affecting its attractiveness as a tourist destination.
Maintaining Quality Amidst Uncertainty
Despite the challenges, the priority for the tourism sector remains the maintenance of service quality and the preservation of Cyprus’s reputation as a safe destination. Angelides expressed a determination to uphold high levels of quality and service, stating, “Our effort – as well as that of the entire hotel sector – is to maintain high levels of quality and service despite the difficulties, while preserving our good reputation as a tourist destination.”
Short-lived Seasonal Movement
During the recent Kataklysmos holiday weekend, Angelides noted some movement in bookings; however, he described it as short-lived. He remarked that hotel bookings are still at relatively low levels, insufficient to counteract cancellations or match the performance of previous years. With uncertainty looming over the summer season, the industry is keenly aware that recovery largely hinges on last-minute bookings.
Hope for Recovery Through De-escalation
Angelides expressed cautious optimism, hoping that ongoing efforts towards de-escalation in the region would help restore confidence in Cyprus as a destination and potentially lower fuel prices, which have also impacted travel. “We are still left with July to generate tourist flow,” he commented, highlighting the importance of the coming months for the sector.
Vulnerability to Geopolitical Developments
Despite these hopes, Angelides warned that Cyprus’ tourism performance remains vulnerable to geopolitical developments and competitive pressures within the broader Mediterranean market. He noted that occupancy levels in key areas such as Larnaca and Famagusta are currently described as “moderate.”
Strategic Focus until 2027
To combat these challenges, Angelides stressed the need for an “aggressive strategy” through to 2027, aimed at dispelling lingering doubts about the island’s safety. He acknowledged that Cyprus faced reputational challenges earlier in the year, which were exploited by competing destinations in Europe. “Now we must work very hard to remove this doubt and focus on attracting additional visitors to offset the damage that has been done,” he said.
Projecting Future Losses and Recovery
Looking ahead, Angelides projected that 2026 would likely close with losses for the sector, although there is hope that these could be mitigated through a season extension and improved performance in the months ahead. He reiterated the significance of adapting the sector’s approach and enhancing its appeal to tourists.
