The focus keyword of this case is the defendant, who was sentenced in Limassol today for attacking a state prosecutor during a court session on April 3. The 42-year-old man has now received a consecutive four-year prison sentence for causing grievous bodily harm, which falls under Article 231 of the Criminal Code.
- The new sentence will commence after he completes his existing prison term. Additionally, one month spent in pre-trial detention for this case will be deducted from the new sentence.
This latest sentence follows a previous judgement where the same court had sentenced him to four years for the abduction of a former partner. The courtroom incident occurred as the three-judge panel was leaving, prompting the defendant to express his displeasure with his earlier sentence, stating, “Four years for two slaps?”
In a sudden outburst, he attacked the state prosecutor as she was escorted from the courtroom by officers from the police’s MMAD unit. The assault resulted in the prosecutor sustaining a fractured nose and swelling to her upper lip.
During the earlier hearing, the defendant’s legal counsel argued for leniency, claiming that her client felt remorse for his actions. In a handwritten note submitted to the court, the defendant expressed regret, stating, “I have regretted my actions and I apologise. I was not myself. I know there is no excuse for what I did.”
