- The evacuation of a residential building in Yermasoyia has become imperative due to safety concerns following a partial collapse that tragically resulted in two fatalities.
The Limassol district government organisation (EOA) plans to seek a court order for the evacuation of the Seagate apartment building located on Vasileos Georgiou I Avenue. District governor Yiannis Tsouloftas confirmed that this application will be filed at the Limassol district court on May 18.
The building’s structural failure occurred on April 11, prompting immediate action from local authorities. In the wake of the incident, a three-day deadline was initially set for residents to vacate the premises, which expired on April 20. However, the process of evacuation has proven to be complex.
Governor Tsouloftas explained that the delay stemmed from the necessity to identify all apartment owners and ensure they were formally notified about the evacuation order. “This is a large number of apartments, all the owners had to be identified and confirm they received the relevant notice,” he stated.
In addition to the Seagate building, authorities have issued warning notices to 36 other potentially hazardous apartment buildings within the Limassol district, highlighting a broader concern over building safety in the area.
As investigations by Limassol police into the collapse are nearing completion, the case file will soon be forwarded to the attorney general for further legal evaluation. The community remains on edge as officials grapple with ensuring the safety of residents in the wake of this tragic event.
