A night out at Cyprus’ new jazz bar, Ella, offers an inviting experience for music lovers and food enthusiasts alike. Nestled in the charming old town of Nicosia, this recently opened venue on Lykourgou 7 Street is already creating a buzz.

  • Looking ahead, Marios plans to introduce a new Japanese yakitori-style fusion menu, aiming to make Ella not just a jazz destination but a vibrant spot for cocktails and dining in the old town.
  • If the future menu and performances are as enticing as my first experience, it’s clear that Ella Jazz Bar is set to become a beloved spot for food, drink, music, and all that jazz in Nicosia.

As I arrived on a Thursday evening, I was greeted by the warm sounds of clinking beer bottles and brewing coffee. The air was filled with anticipation as the Charis Ioannou Quartet prepared to take the stage, setting the scene for an unforgettable night of jazz.

Ella jazz: Stepping Inside Ella

Pulling back the long blue curtain revealed a cosy, dimly-lit bar adorned with small elegant lamps and jazz posters. The ambience was enhanced by shades of red and brown, with a bright ‘Ella’ sign glowing above the stage, inviting guests to settle in.

Live Music That Connects

As the live music commenced, the quartet filled the space with classic jazz standards and improvisations. Charis Ioannou, along with his talented bandmates, created an intimate atmosphere that made it feel like a personal concert. Ioannou’s ability to engage with the audience without a microphone added to the charm, making everyone feel part of the performance.

Meet the Visionary Behind Ella

Owner Marios Polycarpou, a long-time resident of the old town, has a rich history in the local nightlife scene. Previously co-owning Patio Cocktail Bar and managing club Zoo, he has returned to his roots with Ella. His passion for jazz and the desire to create a unique space for musicians and audiences alike led to the bar’s establishment.

“I wanted to open a jazz bar because I love the genre, I love the old town,” he shared during our conversation. His journey as a saxophonist began two years ago, inspiring him to delve deeper into the jazz scene in Cyprus. Marios sees jazz as an art form that deserves more recognition, akin to fine dining—an experience for those who truly appreciate it.

A Focus on Quality Sound

Marios’s commitment to sound quality is evident throughout the venue. He worked closely with sound engineers to ensure that every note resonates perfectly in the high-ceilinged, listed building. “Guests want to be able to talk at their table, still listen to the music clearly,” he explained, which is why the bar serves finger food to avoid the clatter of cutlery.

A Taste of Jazz and Culinary Delights

The menu at Ella complements the musical experience, featuring tapas-style bites that allow for easy enjoyment without disrupting the atmosphere. My platter, consisting of beef tartare, pulled pork, salmon rillette, and truffle mushroom quiche, was deliciously crafted, perfect for sharing or enjoying solo.

Looking ahead, Marios plans to introduce a new Japanese yakitori-style fusion menu, aiming to make Ella not just a jazz destination but a vibrant spot for cocktails and dining in the old town.

Bringing New Life to the Old Town

While new venues are emerging outside the walled city, Marios is keen to breathe new life into the old town. He has initiated a monthly feature where international musicians perform at Ella, further enriching the cultural landscape. Recently, renowned Greek trumpet player Andreas Polizogopoulos captivated a fully-booked audience, with more exciting acts on the horizon.

Jazz for Everyone

For those looking to join in on the fun, Ella hosts an open jam session every last Sunday of the month, encouraging local talent to take the stage. The name Ella is not only a tribute to jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald but also a playful nod to the Greek phrase ‘ela na pame’ or ‘let’s go’, inviting all to experience the charm of the old town once again.

If the future menu and performances are as enticing as my first experience, it’s clear that Ella Jazz Bar is set to become a beloved spot for food, drink, music, and all that jazz in Nicosia.
