- Shortly after, at approximately 5.50pm, a 42-year-old woman also travelling to board an outbound flight was apprehended with 65 packs of untaxed cigarettes in her luggage.
- These illicit tobacco products are often smuggled into the south from the north, crossing over the Green Line and making their way out of Cyprus through one of the nation’s two primary airports.
The first arrest occurred around 4pm when a 47-year-old man, who had just arrived at the airport intending to board an outbound flight, was discovered with 61 cartons of untaxed cigarettes in his possession.
Shortly after, at approximately 5.50pm, a 42-year-old woman also travelling to board an outbound flight was apprehended with 65 packs of untaxed cigarettes in her luggage.
Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Authorities indicated that untaxed tobacco products typically lack the required markings mandated by the Republic of Cyprus, along with the necessary safety warnings in both Turkish and Greek.
These illicit tobacco products are often smuggled into the south from the north, crossing over the Green Line and making their way out of Cyprus through one of the nation’s two primary airports.
