- A video shows an armed man threatening residents in Larnaca's Mackenzie area on Sunday night, highlighting growing concerns over public safety in the city.
The footage, obtained by philenews, depicts a tense moment where the unidentified gunman drew a pistol and aimed it at another person on Oum Haram Street around 9pm. As the targeted individual attempted to approach him, the gunman shouted in Cypriot Greek: “Φύε, φύε τωρά” (Go, go now), indicating a clear intention to intimidate.
This alarming incident unfolded after the suspect attempted to break into a parked vehicle. The vehicle’s owner caught him in the act and began shouting for help, drawing the attention of other residents. The situation escalated quickly, culminating in the armed threat that was captured on camera.
Police have confirmed the identity of the suspect remains unknown, and they are actively searching for him. This event marks the second gun-related threat in Larnaca within a 24-hour period, raising serious concerns about safety in the area.
The previous night, Larnaca was rocked by violence when a group of approximately 20 men, armed with axes, crowbars, and a pistol, clashed in broad daylight near a fast-food restaurant, located just 100 metres from the police headquarters. This confrontation included gunfire, further alarming residents and highlighting a troubling trend of escalating gang activity.
Local authorities are increasingly worried about the apparent rise in organised crime in Larnaca, as gangs appear to be battling for control in public spaces. The incidents over the weekend have prompted calls for heightened security measures and a more robust police presence in the city.
Residents are left shaken by the recent events, with many expressing their fears about safety in their neighbourhoods. The community is looking for answers and reassurance from local law enforcement as they grapple with the implications of these violent encounters.
