The University of Cyprus successfully welcomed 1,350 new students as the academic year commenced this week. According to Kleanthis Pissarides, the university’s deputy director of academic affairs, the enrolment marks the beginning of a vibrant academic environment with a total of 5,500 undergraduate students and approximately 1,500 to 2,000 postgraduate students now starting their studies.
University of: Academic Year Kicks Off Smoothly
The new academic year officially began on Monday, and Pissarides reported that everything is running smoothly. Many of the incoming students secured their places primarily through the Pancyprian examinations, a competitive process that determines admission to the university.
New Facilities Enhance Learning Environment
This September, the university inaugurated new teaching buildings under the Faculty of Engineering, which are now operational. These modern facilities are designed to support the growing number of students and enhance their learning experience.
Accommodation for Students
The university’s dormitory facilities have also seen a full allocation, with all 208 rooms now occupied. Pissarides noted that students must make personal arrangements for housing, as no subsidies for accommodation are provided. However, the university does offer some benefits to students who meet specific socioeconomic criteria, aiming to assist where possible.
Encouragement for New Students
Pissarides extended his congratulations to the first-year students, recognising their hard work in securing a place at the university. He urged them to maintain the same level of effort throughout their studies to successfully complete their programmes. “Students must take advantage of the opportunities which will be given to them,” he said. “Meet new people, develop new skills beyond academic knowledge which will help you become your best selves.”
Looking Ahead
The university is optimistic about the upcoming year, anticipating that the new students will contribute to a dynamic and engaging academic community. With a diverse range of programmes and extracurricular activities, the University of Cyprus aims to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for future challenges.
