On World Peace Day, Turkish Cypriot political parties and groups have voiced their calls for peace in Cyprus and globally, highlighting the ongoing conflict in Gaza. They assert that true peace encompasses justice, equality, and safety for all.
Voices for Change from the Republican Turkish Party
The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) underscored the necessity of peace, stating it is “the only way to safely build our future.” CTP leader Tufan Erhurman expressed the difficulty of celebrating peace while children are suffering in Gaza, labelling the pursuit of peace a “civilisational task” that requires collective effort.
Campaigns and Commitment to Action
In a spirited initiative, the CTP’s women’s group has launched a “Peace Now” campaign, denouncing the violence in Gaza. They articulated a strong stance, stating, “Remaining spectators in wars is like becoming complicit in brutality. We will not be accomplices to this crime.” This campaign reflects a broader desire for action and engagement.
The Call for Unity and Protection
CTP MP Dogus Derya highlighted the urgency of peace, particularly to safeguard children, women, and the environment, emphasising the need for reunification in Cyprus. Fellow MPs weighed in, with Asim Akansoy reminding attendees that the island has not experienced genuine peace since 1974, describing the “Green Line” as merely a temporary ceasefire. Fikri Toros added that democracy and justice can flourish only through real peace founded on empathy, respect, and fairness.
Communal Democracy Party’s Vision
The Communal Democracy Party (TDP) added its voice to the discourse, asserting that peace transcends the mere cessation of hostilities. MP Zeki Celer insisted that social justice, equality, and democracy are prerequisites for true peace, emphasising that intercommunal harmony is achievable only through mutual trust and equality. The party remains resolute in opposing actions that jeopardise these core values.
Protests for Peace and Unity
Meanwhile, the “Road to Independence” group, alongside other organisations, has called for a protest in occupied Nicosia, aiming to participate in a bicommunal peace event at the UN Buffer Zone. They advocate for resistance against “Zionist and imperialist attacks” while promoting a federal solution for Cyprus and fostering stronger community ties.
Concerns Over Regional Conflicts
The New Cyprus Party (YKP) articulated concerns regarding the impact of regional conflicts on Cyprus, citing British bases, Turkish drones, and foreign military presence as contributing factors to the island’s current state. They described the situation as a “frozen war,” lamenting the assimilation policies and economic damage affecting the occupied areas. The party expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause, denouncing wars in Gaza and Ukraine, and calling for the cessation of all occupations alongside full demilitarisation of Cyprus.
