Education Minister Athena Michaelidou announced this figure during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where the registration of the university’s branch in Cyprus was officially approved.
The new medical school, which will offer undergraduate programmes in both Greek and English, is set to become the first of its kind in Nicosia. The establishment of this branch aligns with the government’s strategy to attract foreign university branches to the island, a plan that has been in the works since last year.
Minister Michaelidou expressed optimism about the school’s anticipated opening by the end of October, emphasising the urgency necessitated by the overwhelming interest. “We want to ensure that the university can start its operations as soon as possible, given the significant number of applications we have already received,” she stated.
However, the challenge of securing suitable premises for the university poses a concern. Various buildings have been proposed for the new branch in Nicosia, and these options are currently under evaluation to determine their suitability for educational purposes. Michaelidou highlighted the importance of finding an appropriate location to meet the deadline for the school’s launch.
