A recent survey on school violence conducted by the primary school teachers’ union Poed indicates that 95 per cent of the 1,017 participating teachers have noted an increase in incidents of violence and delinquency among students.

Published on Thursday, the survey highlights that a staggering majority of educators are witnessing a troubling trend in their schools. Poed stated, “The findings unfortunately confirm the particularly worrying scale that school violence and delinquency have reached.” This sentiment reflects a growing concern within the teaching community regarding the safety and well-being of both students and faculty.

Teachers’ Safety in Jeopardy

Among the respondents, 55 per cent reported feeling unsafe at work, while 53 per cent expressed doubts about schools providing a safe environment for children. These figures illustrate a distressing reality for educators who are tasked with nurturing young minds amidst rising threats.

The Nature of Violent Incidents

The survey categorised various forms of violence experienced in schools. It revealed that verbal violence is the most prevalent issue, as reported by 63 per cent of teachers. Teachers are not just bystanders in this situation; 29 per cent have encountered inappropriate behaviour from students, 12 per cent have faced threats of physical violence, and 9 per cent have experienced actual physical violence directed towards them. Such statistics raise alarms about the growing hostility in educational settings.

Inadequate Support for Educators

Despite acknowledging some preventive measures and management tools that have been implemented, Poed emphasised that these initiatives are far from sufficient. The union stated, “Children remain without support for long periods, the quality of education is undermined, and teachers are called upon daily to manage such incidents without substantial or timely support, leading to burnout.” This lack of adequate backing complicates the already challenging task of teaching.

Call for Comprehensive Action

In light of these findings, Poed is urging the government to take greater responsibility in addressing the issue of school violence. The union advocates for “targeted policies and substantive measures” aimed at supporting public schools effectively. “The issue cannot be addressed through piecemeal interventions,” they stated, underscoring the need for a more strategic approach.

A Holistic Approach to Prevention

To combat the troubling rise in school violence, Poed has proposed an eight-pillar plan. This comprehensive strategy includes:
