rising construction — Rising construction costs are significantly impacting the housing market in Cyprus, as discussed by Stephanos Pierides, secretary general of the Federation of Associations of Building Contractors (Oseok), during his recent visit to Brussels.
Rising construction: Conversations with MEPs
Pierides focused on the pressing challenges that soaring construction expenses impose on housing affordability. Meeting with Cypriot MEPs Loukas Fourlas, Michalis Hatzipandelas, and Costas Mavrides, he articulated the urgent need for solutions that can alleviate these pressures.
Collaborating with EU Officials
In addition to engaging with MEPs, Pierides held discussions with Demetris Petrides, Attaché at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the EU. They explored avenues for strengthened cooperation as Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026.
Environmental Focus in Construction
As the chairman of Fiec’s Subcommittee on Environment, Pierides participated in a meeting with Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. The agenda included discussions on water adequacy and how the construction industry can contribute to Europe’s transition towards resilience and sustainability.
Strengthening Cyprus’ Voice in Europe
According to Oseok, its involvement in Fiec empowers Cyprus to have a more substantial influence over European policies that shape the future of the construction sector, both nationally and at the EU level. This engagement is particularly relevant as the country faces challenges in balancing rising costs with the need for affordable housing.
