Nicosia’s festive programme has captivated large crowds this holiday season, showcasing a vibrant array of events that have delighted both residents and visitors. Organised by the Nicosia municipality, the festive programme, titled “Christmas in the Capital!”, kicked off on November 23 with the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree in Eleftheria square.
Festive programme: Launch of the Festivities
The opening event was marked by a lively concert featuring popular artists Stavento and Ivi Adamou, setting a joyful tone for the celebrations. This year’s programme promises an extensive range of activities that will run until Epiphany, culminating in the traditional blessing of the waters at Ayios Georgios in Athalassa national park.
Engagement and Participation
Mayor Charalambos Prountzos expressed his contentment with the enthusiastic public engagement observed during the festivities. He noted that the municipality had presented a diverse selection of activities, all of which have been warmly embraced by the community.
“The Fairytale Town and the open-air concert have been particularly successful, encouraging widespread participation,” Mayor Prountzos remarked. The bustling atmosphere in the city centre has drawn thousands, particularly to the parades and events held at Eleftheria square, which has been transformed into a Christmas village.
Collaboration and Community Events
The municipality has also partnered with various third-party organisers to enhance the festive offerings. According to Mayor Prountzos, the festive houses along Makariou avenue, the Epic Street Fest at Spyridaki square, and events at the chapel of Ayios Dometios have all been well received by the public, reflecting a strong community spirit.
The market along 28th October avenue, organised in collaboration with the Mall of Engomi, has emerged as a highlight of the festivities, featuring over 85 vendors. This market is touted as the largest of its kind in Nicosia, offering a diverse selection of local products and crafts.
Diverse Activities and Entertainment
In addition to the market, the festive programme includes a variety of other events. Highlights include the Aglandjia bus event, captivating performances by Papillon at Spyros Kyprianou park, and exciting children’s parades. A notable feature this year is a parade of historic vehicles, which has added a unique charm to the celebrations.
The Nicosia municipal theatre has also played a significant role in the festive season, hosting a successful concert by the Youth Symphony Orchestra and a performance of Cinderella. These shows will continue through the holiday period, providing entertainment for audiences of all ages.
Ongoing Events and Activities
Activities are set to occur every weekend until Epiphany at both Eleftheria square and Makariou avenue. Additionally, daily events are being held at the festive houses located on Ledra and Onasagorou pedestrian streets, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The city’s festive programme has not only brought joy and excitement but has also fostered a sense of togetherness among participants, highlighting Nicosia’s vibrant community spirit during the holiday season. With numerous events planned, the celebrations are poised to continue bringing smiles and festive cheer well into the New Year.
