Cypriots are set to benefit from a new nationwide awareness campaign aimed at tackling fatty liver disease, as announced by the Cyprus Liver Patients Association Prometheus on Thursday, coinciding with World Fatty Liver Day.
Prometheus emphasised the importance of early diagnosis, stating, “Through modern, non-invasive tests and targeted awareness campaigns, we seek to ensure the early diagnosis of liver disease.” This initiative seeks to educate the public about a condition that is rapidly becoming a global health concern.
Global Health Challenge
Fatty liver disease is not just a local issue but a significant global health challenge. According to Prometheus, the number of people living with this condition is projected to reach an alarming 357 million worldwide by 2030. This statistic highlights the urgency for increased awareness and preventive measures.
Previous Screening Initiatives
In May, the association made strides towards combating this issue by offering free liver health screenings over three days as part of the European Liver Screening Campaign 2026. The event saw a high turnout and demonstrated a strong interest in liver health, which Prometheus described as “just the beginning of a broader effort.”
Risks of Untreated Fatty Liver Disease
Prometheus cautioned that untreated fatty liver disease can lead to severe complications, including liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the most severe cases, a liver transplant may be necessary. This stark warning serves to underline the importance of awareness and early intervention.
Preventive Measures and Lifestyle Changes
To combat the rising threat of fatty liver disease, Prometheus encourages individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles. They recommend a balanced diet, regular physical activity, effective weight management, and routine medical check-ups as vital steps in reducing the risk of developing this condition. By making these changes, individuals can play a crucial role in preventing the onset of fatty liver disease.
