sba dhekelia — sba dhekelia — The Sovereign Base Areas’ first female Area Administration Officer, Maria Kyriakidou-Pieri, has made it clear that her commitment to strengthening relationships with local communities will be a central focus as she embarks on her new role. Officially appointed in August, Kyriakidou-Pieri brings with her extensive experience gathered over 24 years working in the Bases, having taken over from George Kiteos following his transfer to Akrotiri.
Kyriakidou-Pieri began her journey in the Bases in 2001 and has since paved the way for women in an environment historically dominated by men. Her previous role as a Republic of Cyprus civil servant at the Larnaca District Administration Office equipped her with vital skills in relationship building, which she aims to leverage in her current position.
“My vision is to make a meaningful difference for communities by turning public and community projects from plans into reality,” she stated, underlining the importance of the SBA Administration in supporting local initiatives. Her role involves ensuring that the Bases can fulfil their primary military purposes while coexisting harmoniously with the needs and aspirations of local communities.
Kyriakidou-Pieri emphasised the necessity of maintaining a delicate balance between operational requirements and community wellbeing. “I am committed to ensuring that both can thrive,” she said, reflecting on the challenges and responsibilities of her new position.
Her career trajectory is noteworthy; she was the first woman in several roles within the Bases. Starting as an assistant area inspector, she rose through the ranks to become the deputy area officer in 2020. “From the beginning, my focus was clear: to work hard, build the knowledge and expertise needed to develop confidence, master the work, and grow professionally,” she explained.
Now leading a team of accomplished individuals, both men and women, Kyriakidou-Pieri acknowledges the excellent contributions of her colleagues. She cherishes the relationships she has cultivated over the years with the SBA communities, fostering a spirit of trust and partnership that aims to serve everyone’s interests effectively.
While recognizing that communities do not always see eye to eye, she highlighted the importance of maintaining open and constructive dialogue. “This enables us to address issues collaboratively and find effective solutions to problems,” she added, showcasing her dedication to collaborative efforts.
