- malicious fires — Two fires that broke out in the forested areas of Limassol have been confirmed as maliciously set, according to fire brigade spokesman Andreas Kettis.
The first fire ignited on Sunday morning between the villages of Omodos and Mandria, followed by a second blaze in the afternoon near Anoyira. Both fires were extinguished promptly, but Kettis emphasised the intentional nature of these incidents.
“The climatic and environmental conditions in the areas where they occurred are in no way favourable for them to start so easily, and they were definitely set maliciously,” he stated. This assertion underscores a growing concern over the deliberate targeting of natural areas in the region.
Kettis urged the local community to remain vigilant. “Be on alert, to observe, to keep guard, and to inform the authorities if they notice suspicious behaviour in this regard. The smallest piece of information is important. We love this place, it is up to us to protect it,” he added.
The Limassol district, known for its rich natural landscapes, faces ongoing risks from intentional fires, especially during the warmer months. Local authorities are keen to engage the public in protective efforts against such malicious acts.
