On Thursday night, violence erupted during a confrontation between supporters of AEL and Apollon, leading to damage and unrest in the city centre. In a press release, the Cyprus Football Association indicated that police initially recommended limiting attendance or even holding the match behind closed doors. This suggestion came after meetings held in advance of the match.
Following these discussions, another meeting occurred on Friday, where the police presented additional security measures that the association accepted. However, the subsequent shift in stance regarding the attendance led to a breakdown in control during the match buildup.
“After the meeting, police headquarters sent a letter with new positions regarding the match, which were urgently put before the association’s executive committee,” the association stated. It called for responsibility and respect from all parties involved to safeguard the integrity of football.
In light of the incidents, which the association condemned as having “no place in the sport,” they decided the upcoming match would proceed with pre-sold tickets only, keeping ticket offices closed.
Additionally, the association requested that the presidents of AEL and Apollon convene with police to urge fans to behave responsibly and avoid further violence. They emphasised the need for cooperation with law enforcement to ensure the match could be held safely.
As investigations continue, police are working to identify those responsible for the violence. Reports indicate that the clashes were premeditated, with AEK fans reportedly targeting the Apollon club building, throwing firecrackers and Molotov cocktails during the altercation.
When police arrived at the scene, the suspects fled, leaving behind a trail of destruction that included damage to eleven parked cars, primarily consisting of broken windows and windscreens. One victim reported that a fire extinguisher had been thrown at their vehicle, shattering the back window.
Officers cordoned off the area throughout Friday, reviewing CCTV footage and collecting evidence to track down the perpetrators. Eyewitness accounts suggest a large group of masked individuals arrived moments before the violence erupted.
The situation remains tense as the Limassol police work diligently to restore order and prevent further incidents as the match approaches.
