Following recent rainfall and extensive restoration efforts, the historic Kouklia reservoir, one of the oldest in Cyprus, is witnessing a revival of its natural habitat. This initiative has brought water back to a wetland that had suffered from years of degradation.

Kouklia reservoir: Gathering for Change

Representatives from various sectors, including local stakeholders, environmental experts, and bird protection groups, convened at the Kouklia wetlands to celebrate this revitalisation. Their collective efforts reflect a commitment to preserving this critical habitat. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced that the successful restoration not only benefits wildlife but also strengthens local climate resilience.

Wildlife Thriving Again

Birdlife is already responding positively to the changes, with migratory species returning to the area. The improved water conditions are expected to support a wider range of species, including amphibians and small mammals that rely on freshwater habitats.

Environmental groups have highlighted the importance of wetlands as vital stopover points for migratory birds, especially in regions like Cyprus where freshwater resources are becoming scarce and increasingly threatened by drought.

A Project for the Future

“This project strengthens climate resilience while supporting a reservoir that has, over time, become a valuable habitat for wildlife and biodiversity,” stated Alexandre Prieto, Project Manager at UNDP. “Initiatives like this are essential to support sustainable development across Cyprus, particularly in the face of climate change.”

Collaboration for Sustainable Solutions

Giulia Bertezzolo, Head of the Cyprus Settlement Support Unit at the European Commission, also underscored the significance of the event. She noted that it unites those responsible for water management with those dedicated to environmental protection, reinforcing the need for sustainable solutions that balance both demands.

Restoration Efforts and Infrastructure Improvements

Completed in October 2023, the restoration works addressed long-standing challenges faced by the Kouklia reservoir. Key infrastructure repairs, the installation of a new water control system, and improvements to access and monitoring have transformed the reservoir into a more efficient water retention facility, capable of better handling periods of low rainfall.

Originally constructed in 1900 as a water infrastructure project, the Kouklia reservoir has evolved into a crucial habitat for wildlife over the decades. However, limited maintenance had led to its decline, diminishing its effectiveness particularly under climate change pressures.

Today, the Kouklia reservoir stands as a testament to successful environmental restoration, playing a dual role in water retention and wildlife habitat support.
