The Indian frigate INS Trikand has arrived in Cyprus for a four-day visit, marking a significant step in naval cooperation between India and Cyprus. The ship docked at Limassol port on 21 September and will participate in various diplomatic and professional activities with the Cyprus Navy.
Ins trikand: Bilateral Defence Cooperation Takes Centre Stage
This visit comes in the wake of agreements reached during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June, aimed at deepening bilateral defence ties. The Indian High Commission in Cyprus highlighted that the presence of the Talwar-class frigate signifies a meaningful advancement in naval training and defence industry collaboration.
Planned Activities and Engagements
During its stay, INS Trikand will engage in a series of events, including a courtesy call to Cyprus Navy Commander Rear Admiral Minas Solomonidis. Additionally, Indian High Commissioner Shri Manish and Captain Sachin Kulkarni will host a reception aboard the ship. A unique feature of the visit will be a yoga demonstration, showcasing cultural ties alongside military cooperation.
The ship will also open its doors to the public on 23 September, allowing visitors to explore one of India’s frontline stealth frigates. This engagement is scheduled from 10:00 to 17:00 local time, providing an opportunity for the community to witness cutting-edge naval engineering.
Joint Exercise to Enhance Maritime Security
A highlight of the visit is the joint PASSEX exercise, set to take place on 24 September. This collaborative exercise aims to bolster maritime security and strengthen operational coordination between the Indian and Cyprus naval forces.
Indian officials have described the visit as a symbol of enduring friendship and expressed optimism regarding the future of bilateral defence ties. The initiative falls under the 2025-29 Action Plan outlined in the Joint Declaration for Implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, agreed upon on 16 June 2024.
