february meetings — february meetings — February dates have been proposed for talks between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, as confirmed by government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis. The potential meeting dates are Monday, February 16, Wednesday, February 18, and Tuesday, February 24.
The proposed dates were communicated to Erhurman through Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Erhurman’s undersecretary Mehmet Dana. If these meetings proceed, they are expected to be hosted by UN special representative Khassim Diagne.
Letymbiotis noted that as of now, there has been “no response from the Turkish Cypriot side.” This lack of communication follows a recent tripartite meeting involving Erhurman, UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin, and Christodoulides, during which discussions were held about the continuation of dialogue.
After the meeting, Christodoulides expressed optimism about future talks, stating that Erhurman had shown readiness to meet without Holguin present if she is unavailable in Cyprus. Holguin, however, confirmed that the meeting had concluded without any agreements, and highlighted that no larger meetings would be arranged until meaningful progress is made regarding confidence-building measures.
Both sides have been encouraged to maintain a “constant and direct dialogue” during this pre-negotiation phase. Holguin emphasised the importance of ongoing trust-building initiatives, suggesting that these efforts are vital before any substantive negotiations can take place.
