akamas violations — akamas violations — The Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation has firmly rejected what they label a “slanderous attack” by Paphos Chamber of Commerce President Charalambos Pittokopitis regarding alleged violations at Agios Georgios Peyias in Akamas.

In a recent statement, the ecologists responded to claims made by Pittokopitis, who suggested that environmental organisations sought to cancel the popular carob festival. This assertion was reported by the Cyprus News Agency and various television outlets during evening news broadcasts.

The ecologists highlighted that the Audit Office’s recently published report clarified the situation, stating that the connection between the private party and the annual Carob Festival was “arbitrary and misleading.” They emphasised that the stage and sound equipment set up for the private event bore no relationship to the festival activities, and the necessary permits appeared to be absent.

According to the ecologists, the relevant authorities were aware of the private party’s organisation and its potential risks but failed to take appropriate action. They expressed their frustration, noting that misleading statements about the carob festival persisted, including remarks made by Pittokopitis during the event.

This situation has ignited a robust discussion about environmental accountability and the responsibilities of both private and public entities in protecting natural areas, particularly within the Natura 2000 network.
