Culture Deputy Minister Vasiliki Kassianidou announced on Monday the government’s ambitious cultural programme, designed to complement Cyprus’ role in holding the Council of the European Union’s rotating presidency.

In 2026, over 500 artists, creators, technicians, curators, and cultural professionals are expected to converge on Cyprus as part of this programme, marking it as one of the most significant and outward-facing projects initiated by the Culture Ministry. Kassianidou described the €4.4 million cultural programme as one of the state’s largest and most strategic investments in Cypriot culture, emphasising its potential multiplier benefit in showcasing Cyprus as a nation rich in cultural heritage.

Kassianidou highlighted the importance of culture, stating it is emerging as an essential tool for political cohesion and a vital expression of our shared European identity. The programme aims to promote both the cultural heritage of Cyprus and contemporary Cypriot creations as integral components of European and Mediterranean history.

The programme will kick off with an opening ceremony scheduled for January 7, titled “memory – present – future.” This event will feature the participation of over 100 Cypriot artists and cultural professionals, setting a celebratory tone for the cultural initiatives to follow.
Moreover, the cultural programme will host activities in 31 countries, with particularly notable actions planned in 11 countries including Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom. This international reach aims to bolster the visibility of Cypriot culture on a global scale.
The Road Ahead for Cyprus
As Cyprus prepares to take over the Council of the EU’s rotating presidency on Thursday for a six-month term, the cultural programme stands as a testament to the island’s commitment to enhancing its cultural landscape while fulfilling its institutional responsibilities. Following Cyprus’s term, Ireland will succeed the presidency on June 30.
