Cyprus seeds: Recognition from Financial Times
In March 2025, Cyprus Seeds was honoured by the Financial Times, being named “One of Europe’s Leading Startup Hubs.” The organisation ranked 104 out of 3,000 competitors, marking a historic moment as it became the first entity from Cyprus to achieve this prestigious recognition. This accolade is viewed as a significant boost for the country’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, showcasing the potential of Cypriot startups on a European stage.
Acknowledgements from the Cypriot Diaspora
Further accolades followed in May 2025, when Cyprus Seeds received an award in the Startups and Innovation category from the Cypriot Diaspora. This recognition underscores the organisation’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting startups within the community.
Engaging Talent and Building Partnerships
During the summer months, Cyprus Seeds welcomed Harvard undergraduate Finn Tondro as an intern, who expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt farewell video. His contributions during his time were lauded, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to attracting global talent.
As Cyprus Seeds operates its fourth cycle of the Grant Programme, it is gearing up to begin its third year of collaboration with the Phaethon Centre of Excellence. This partnership is crucial as it aims to lay the foundational work for the establishment of the Phaethon Innovation Hub, an initiative intended to foster further innovation and research in the region.
Expanding the Team
In a move to enhance its capabilities, Cyprus Seeds plans to double its team from three to six members by the end of 2025. This expansion is designed to support its growing initiatives and ensure that the organisation can continue to nurture emerging talents.
Connecting the Innovation Ecosystem
Cyprus Seeds has intensified its involvement in the local innovation ecosystem through various networking activities. Notably, it organised two panel discussions at the 2025 Reflect Festival, providing a platform for dialogue between alumni, new teams, and industry stakeholders such as Novartis Cyprus and Titan Cement Group. Additionally, the organisation hosted an international event on technology transfer, centred around the theme “From University to Market: The Role of Technology Transfer.”
Strategic Partnerships for Growth
A strategic partnership with ConceptionX, the UK’s leading PhD deeptech venture programme, has provided additional momentum for the fourth cohort of Cyprus Seeds. Through a combination of virtual and in-person sessions, participants are being equipped with essential skills in customer discovery, pitching, investment readiness, and intellectual property management. This initiative has catalysed the commercialisation efforts of six innovative projects.
Success Stories in Innovation
Among the notable projects is RustAlert, developed by Dr Andreas Christofe, who conceived the idea for a smarter corrosion detection method while crossing the Rio-Antirio Bridge in Greece in 2017. Now being developed at the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence and Cyprus University of Technology, RustAlert has successfully patented a non-invasive tool that reduces inspection costs by up to 40 per cent. Supported by Cyprus Seeds, the team is currently advancing a prototype and seeking global partnerships to bring their innovation to market.
Another promising project is InvasiCell, which has been developed at the University of Cyprus. This live-cell platform accurately recreates the tumour microenvironment and has demonstrated strong predictive capabilities in cancer models. After being selected for the second and third cycles of Cyprus Seeds’ programme, InvasiCell has filed several patents and is now in discussions with Idylle Labs in France regarding a potential licensing agreement.
