retail turnover — Retail turnover in Cyprus saw a notable increase in July 2025, with the Retail Trade Turnover Value Index rising by 5.2% compared to the same month last year. This growth reflects a robust performance across various sectors, as reported by the Statistical Service.
- These figures paint a promising picture for the Cypriot retail sector, indicating resilience and adaptability in the face of changing consumer preferences and economic conditions.
Retail turnover: Strong Performance in Food Sector
Among the categories tracked, food, beverages, and tobacco in specialised stores exhibited the most significant growth, soaring by 15.3% in terms of value. This surge is attributed to a combination of factors including increased consumer spending and a growing preference for specialised retail outlets.
Volume Growth Outpaces Value
Interestingly, the Retail Trade Turnover Volume Index showed an even more impressive increase of 8.7% year-on-year. The food, beverages, and tobacco category again led the way, this time with a staggering 19.8% rise in volume. Such growth indicates not just higher prices but also a substantial increase in the quantity of goods sold.
Clothing and Footwear Gains
The clothing and footwear sector also performed well, with a year-on-year increase of 15.7% in volume. This trend highlights a resurgence in consumer confidence in fashion retail, likely influenced by changing seasonal styles and promotional activities.
Decline in Motor Fuels
However, not all sectors experienced growth. The motor fuels category faced a 5.7% decline in value. This drop may reflect shifts in consumer behaviour, with more people opting for alternative modes of transportation or reducing travel due to economic factors.
Educational and Recreational Goods See Decrease
In terms of volume, the only category to record a downturn was educational and recreational goods, which include books, stationery, sporting equipment, and toys. This sector saw a decrease of 1%, possibly linked to the winding down of the school year and a seasonal dip in demand for such items.
Year-to-Date Trends Indicate Sustained Growth
Looking at the broader picture, from January to July 2025, the Retail Trade Turnover Value Index increased by 6.4% compared to the same period in the previous year. The Volume Index also showed a healthy rise of 7.2%, suggesting a consistent upward trend in retail activity.
These figures paint a promising picture for the Cypriot retail sector, indicating resilience and adaptability in the face of changing consumer preferences and economic conditions.
