The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics (CING) has initiated the clinical phase of its COMFORTage research project on dementia, coinciding with World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21. This significant study aims to develop methods for the early prognosis and prevention of dementia, particularly focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent form of the condition.
- This clinical study represents a vital step forward in understanding and combating dementia, with the potential to significantly improve the lives of individuals at risk of developing this condition.
Engaging Participants for Groundbreaking Research
Healthy individuals and those experiencing memory disorders aged over 50 are invited to take part in this important research. The study draws on CING’s multidisciplinary expertise, with participants receiving comprehensive examinations from a team of specialists including neurologists, neuropsychologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists, and neurophysiologists.
Comparative Analysis Across European Countries
The results of the COMFORTage study will be compared with data collected from participants across Europe. Notably, seven other countries are concurrently conducting similar clinical studies aimed at harmonising data collection. This collaborative effort seeks to create a robust dataset that encompasses clinical and molecular profiles of participants.
Utilising Advanced Methods for Health Insights
The data gathered will include biochemical and molecular biomarkers, analysed through specialised bioinformatics methods. The findings are anticipated to enhance healthcare models, enabling health professionals to provide tailored recommendations for dementia based on advanced research findings and individual patient profiles.
A Collaborative European Initiative
The COMFORTage project is funded by the European Union under Grant Number 101137301. It brings together health scientists, social scientists, and researchers from 39 organisations across 12 countries, with CING leading one category of the clinical studies.
Raising Awareness and Understanding of Dementia
In addition to research, CING has co-organised an awareness day focused on dementia with the Municipality of Nicosia. During this event, smaller interactive workshops were conducted at CING’s premises to gather insights and recommendations from various stakeholders involved in dementia-related activities. Participants included dementia researchers, medical students, and caregivers of individuals affected by dementia.
Future Initiatives and Public Engagement
CING is committed to continuing its efforts to raise public awareness about dementia and to incorporate diverse perspectives from multiple disciplines. Future initiatives will be announced on CING’s social media channels, providing ongoing engagement with the community.
How to Get Involved
