- Customs officers in Nicosia have seized undeclared tobacco products from travellers at Ledra street and Ayios Dhometios crossing points, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat tobacco smuggling.
Undeclared tobacco: Seizures Begin with Romanian Citizen
The first significant incident occurred on June 30 when a Romanian citizen was stopped while attempting to carry six boxes of cigarettes to Ireland. Officers discovered that the cigarettes lacked the required health warnings and traceability codes. Following the seizure, the individual was arrested but later released after paying a €360 out-of-court settlement.
British Tourists Found with Unmarked Tobacco
Just a day later, on July 1, customs officials conducted checks on two British tourists travelling in a taxi to the United Kingdom at the Agios Dhometios crossing point. During this inspection, officers uncovered ten boxes of cigarettes and 250 grams of rolling tobacco that were also devoid of duty-free markings and safety codes. The tourists were arrested and subsequently released after accepting a €690 settlement, with all tobacco products confiscated.
Efforts to Combat Tobacco Smuggling
Authorities have emphasised that these checks are part of a broader initiative to prevent illegal tobacco smuggling through Cyprus crossing points. The customs department noted that the seized items were intended for personal transport outside Cyprus but failed to comply with EU labelling and traceability standards.
Legal Warnings to Travellers
In light of these recent actions, customs officials have reminded travellers that undeclared tobacco products may be confiscated and are subject to fines under Cyprus customs law. This serves as a critical reminder for those planning to travel with tobacco products to ensure they adhere to legal requirements.
