linear park — Construction works for the EU-funded linear park project in Nicosia have officially commenced. Spanning 3.7 kilometres, this initiative aims to connect the northern and southern parts of the city through the buffer zone, enhancing urban connectivity.
Linear park: Bridging Communities through Green Spaces
The project, known as the Pedieos River/Kanlidere rehabilitation, is designed to improve accessibility around the river that winds through the capital. With the goal of fostering community ties, the park will serve as a vital green corridor that facilitates movement and interaction between the two communities.
Phased Development Plan
Set to be completed by the end of February 2026, the first phase will extend over 1.2 kilometres. This initial stage includes the construction of a two-way bicycle lane, a sidewalk, and a green belt that will provide access to the river. These enhancements are expected to not only beautify the area but also promote outdoor activities and environmental stewardship.
Building on a Solid Foundation
The launch of this construction follows an extensive preparatory phase, which included a feasibility study conducted by the European Commission between 2018 and 2019. The project was later finalised by the UN Development Programme in September 2024, incorporating environmental assessments and feedback from various stakeholders.
A Step Towards Reunification
This initiative is part of the EU’s aid programme aimed at the Turkish Cypriot community. It reflects a broader commitment to reconciliation efforts on the island, as the park is intended to facilitate interactions and collaborations between the north and south. By enhancing the natural environment and public spaces, the project aims to bring communities together, contributing to peacebuilding efforts in Cyprus.
