President Nikos Christodoulides took part in a crucial meeting of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ on Friday, aimed at coordinating efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.
The meeting, held virtually with participation from London, was chaired by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. Key figures included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, alongside Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. An additional twenty leaders joined via video link, demonstrating a broad commitment to supporting Ukraine.
During this gathering, the leaders engaged in discussions surrounding measures to bolster Ukraine’s defence and maintain its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The ongoing war, now significantly impacting the geopolitical landscape, prompted a collective reaffirmation of support from the international community.
One of the focal points of the discussions was the contentious debate over the potential provision of long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Rutte emphasised that the ultimate decision regarding this military aid rests with US President Donald Trump, highlighting the intricate web of international relations involved in the conflict.
Following the meeting, the BBC reported on the warm interaction between Starmer and Zelenskiy, where Starmer assured the Ukrainian leader that Russian President Vladimir Putin was ‘not serious’ about peace. He reinforced the message that ‘your security is our security,’ signalling a united front among Western leaders in their support for Ukraine.
Cyprus, represented by Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, reiterated its position of firm support for Ukraine, reflecting on its own historical struggles. With 51 years of occupation in its own territory following the Turkish invasion, Cyprus advocates for respect for the UN Charter and the sovereignty of all nations, aligning its stance closely with the principles of the Coalition of the Willing.
