The repatriation of Cypriots stranded in the Middle East is currently the top priority for the Cyprus government, according to statements made by the foreign ministry on Sunday. Spokesman Theodoros Gotsis confirmed that efforts are underway to bring citizens home as soon as feasible.

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos is actively engaged in discussions with various companies and partners in the region to assess the situation and facilitate the repatriation process. In a post on X, Kombos mentioned his recent conversations with European officials, including Vice President of the European Commission Kaya Kallas and his Italian and Greek counterparts, Antonio Tajani and Giorgos Gerapetritis.

During these talks, the emphasis has been placed on the urgent need to de-escalate tensions in Iran through diplomatic channels and dialogue, aiming for restored regional security. Later on Sunday, Kombos is set to join a teleconference of European foreign ministers called by Kallas to further discuss the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and its impact on European citizens trapped in the area.

Gotsis reiterated the government’s commitment, stating, “Once the airspace opens and the possibility exists, the priority for Cyprus will be its citizens.” This statement underscores the urgency of the situation, as many Cypriots remain unable to leave the region.

In a supportive move, the UAE foreign ministry has issued a circular stating it will cover the costs for those trapped within its borders. Gotsis encouraged any Cypriots currently in the UAE to reach out for assistance at the provided contact number +97126576283, ensuring they receive the help they need.

To further aid in the repatriation efforts, the government is urging citizens in the Middle East to register on the Cyprus platform Connect2CY. This initiative aims to streamline communication and ensure that all stranded citizens can be accounted for as plans for their safe return are developed.
