Flu deaths have risen to 12 as health officials report a surge in cases across the country. On Monday alone, five individuals succumbed to flu-related complications, according to Elisavet Constantinou, permanent secretary of the health ministry.
Flu deaths: Current Situation in Hospitals
Hospitals are facing significant challenges due to rising flu infections. By Friday, reports indicated that 98 patients were being treated for influenza, leading to bed shortages in several facilities. Health officials are monitoring the situation closely, as the number of hospital admissions for Influenza A has stabilised despite the increase in fatalities.
Symptoms and Severity
Patients suffering from influenza A are experiencing a spectrum of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe cases that necessitate intensive care. Charalambos Charilaou, spokesman for the state health services organisation (Okypy), noted that while the current number of cases is notable, it is not yet a cause for alarm. He emphasised the importance of ongoing surveillance as the winter season progresses.
Comparison to Previous Seasons
This year’s flu deaths exceed those recorded last season, highlighting a concerning trend. The majority of the deceased were elderly individuals with pre-existing health conditions, alongside one infant who tragically died from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This uptick in fatalities underscores the critical need for public health measures.
Vaccination Efforts
In light of the rising flu cases, health officials continue to advocate for vaccination, particularly among high-risk populations. Constantinou reaffirmed that flu vaccination remains the most effective strategy to prevent severe illness. As of late 2025, approximately 110,000 vaccinations have been administered through the government’s flu vaccination programme, with vulnerable groups representing about 75% of those vaccinated.
Covid-19 Vaccination Rates
In contrast to the flu vaccination efforts, the uptake of Covid-19 vaccinations has been markedly low, with only around 3,800 individuals receiving the vaccine recently. This disparity raises concerns about the community’s readiness to combat both flu and Covid-19 during the winter months.
Health Ministry’s Preparedness
Constantinou has assured the public that the health ministry is well-prepared to handle the flu surge. The ministry has implemented necessary measures to ensure that the healthcare system can cope with increased demand. Continuous monitoring and assessment of the situation remain a priority for health authorities.
