He remarked, “This characteristic of his made him cosmopolitan and universal… the accuracy and speed of his thinking were the key to everything else he encountered and faced in his long life.”
Christodoulides also highlighted Vassiliou’s pivotal role in tax reforms and public administration during his presidency, as well as his contribution to establishing the University of Cyprus. He noted that Vassiliou’s leadership fostered an environment where citizens felt free to express their political beliefs.

Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis praised Vassiliou’s “erudition and deep democratic consciousness,” stating that he laid the foundations for a modern Cyprus despite the challenges faced after the invasion. He referred to Vassiliou’s efforts regarding the Cyprus problem and his significant role in the island’s accession to the European Union in 2004, calling it Vassiliou’s “magnum opus.”
Evelthon Vassiliou, the late president’s son, delivered a heartfelt address, saying, “You lived a full life, a life with meaning, a life of service, safe travels my father.” He expressed his pride in his father’s legacy and the values he instilled in their family, particularly the importance of honesty in leadership.

Honouring an Educational Visionary
Tasos Christofides, rector of the University of Cyprus, highlighted Vassiliou’s instrumental role in the institution’s establishment. He described Vassiliou as a democrat and a free-minded individual, emphasising that the university would not exist in its current form without his persistent efforts. Christofides recalled awarding Vassiliou an honorary doctorate in 2003, recognising his vision for Cyprus’s future within the European context.
Androulla Vassiliou expressed during the funeral that Cyprus would have been significantly different had her husband served a second presidential term. She stated, “He established the republic and laid the foundations of the modern state,” lamenting that a narrow electoral defeat in 1993 prevented him from continuing his crucial reforms.
