The identity of a body found in the sea off the Avdimou coast remains unconfirmed as DNA tests are ongoing, with authorities investigating the disappearance of Russian businessman Vladislav Baumgertner.

  • The body was discovered on Wednesday in waters under the jurisdiction of the British bases. Due to its advanced state of decomposition, immediate identification was not possible.
  • A post-mortem examination has been conducted by a coroner from the British bases, with samples taken to determine the man's identity and the cause of death.

The body was discovered on Wednesday in waters under the jurisdiction of the British bases. Due to its advanced state of decomposition, immediate identification was not possible.

A post-mortem examination has been conducted by a coroner from the British bases, with samples taken to determine the man’s identity and the cause of death.

While police have yet to formally connect the discovery to Baumgertner, sources close to the investigation indicated to the Cyprus Mail that certain items of clothing found with the body match what the businessman was last seen wearing. This detail has raised speculation regarding the remains possibly belonging to him, although officials emphasised that confirmation will rely solely on forensic analysis.

Vladislav Baumgertner, the former chief executive of the fertiliser company Uralkali, has been missing since January 7, having disappeared from his home in Pissouri. Following his disappearance, search efforts have concentrated on the area where his mobile phone last transmitted a signal. These operations have included land searches, coastal patrols, and aerial reconnaissance, although they have faced challenges from severe weather conditions in recent days.

Authorities have stated that all possibilities are being examined, including the chances of an accident, suicide, or criminal involvement. To date, no injuries have been officially reported, and police have reiterated that there is no current indication linking Baumgertner’s case to any other investigations involving foreign nationals on the island. This includes the recent death of a Russian diplomat in Nicosia, which has garnered attention but remains unrelated to Baumgertner’s disappearance based on available evidence.
