Liquid ecstasy has been linked to the tragic events in Larnaca involving the death of a 78-year-old man and the poisoning of four others. Police investigations are ongoing, and on Wednesday, officials announced that traces of the substance were discovered in the deceased man’s home.
- As the investigation unfolds, authorities are determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding this alarming case, which has left the Larnaca community in shock.
The elderly man was found unconscious by his daughter on Saturday and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Larnaca general hospital. Following his death, three relatives—his 81-year-old sister, his 62-year-old niece, and his 77-year-old neighbour—visited the home on Sunday. Unfortunately, all three lost consciousness after consuming coffee and water during their gathering.
Emergency services rushed them to Larnaca general hospital, where they remain stable. The deceased man’s 72-year-old wife had been hospitalised the day before after feeling unwell, and she is currently receiving treatment.
Authorities seized several samples from the man’s home for laboratory analysis, which detected y-Butyrolactone (GBL). This chemical is often used as a cleaning agent but can act as a prodrug of GHB, commonly referred to as liquid ecstasy or the ‘date rape drug.’
An autopsy was performed on Monday, but details have yet to be released. Police have also revealed that the couple’s son had previously faced drug-related charges, specifically involving possession of liquid drugs. Investigators are exploring potential links between him and the current incident.
