Hospitals across Cyprus were reported to be operating at between 85 and 90 per cent capacity during the holiday season, a figure expected to rise in the coming days following festive gatherings. Charalambos Charilaou, spokesman for the state health services organisation (Okypy), shared insights on the situation during a recent interview with CyBC radio.
Hospitals: Seasonal Infections Drive Hospital Admissions
Charilaou noted that the spike in hospital occupancy is a “natural consequence of the period”, attributing many of the admissions during the holidays to seasonal infections. He elaborated that the majority of cases involved patients suffering from influenza ‘A’, with one reported death linked to the virus.
Impact of Indoor Gatherings
During his conversation with the Cyprus News Agency, Charilaou explained that the increased incidence of illness often correlates with people gathering in closed indoor spaces during winter months, especially during festive events. He stated, “We will have deaths, like every year,” but reassured the public that this year’s infection rates resemble those of last year. He also confirmed that the surge in cases has not compromised the functionality of the health system.
Vulnerable Populations at Risk
Most patients currently hospitalised are elderly individuals, those with pre-existing health conditions, and persons with weakened immune systems. Charilaou emphasised the importance of protective measures, advising the public to limit movements and avoid close contact with vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly, even though no restrictive measures are currently in place.
Ventilation and Hygiene Recommendations
Charilaou highlighted that gatherings often occur without adequate ventilation, increasing the risk of virus transmission. He encouraged the public to ensure proper airflow by opening windows in indoor settings and stressed the importance of hand hygiene. “It would be good when we are in such gatherings to open windows so that spaces are adequately ventilated,” he advised.
Influenza Vaccination Progress
As of now, approximately 112,000 individuals across Cyprus have received the influenza vaccine. Charilaou remarked on the critical role of vaccination in mitigating the effects of seasonal viruses. He also touched upon the ongoing Covid-19 situation, stating that while the virus remains present, the number of cases is low and not a cause for concern.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus Observations
In discussing other respiratory illnesses, Charilaou mentioned the current status of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), noting that the phenomenon has not been significantly observed this year. In previous years, RSV had led to full paediatric units in hospitals. However, he posited that this year’s comparative reduction may be attributed to Gesy’s vaccination programme for infants under eight months and pregnant women.

As the holiday season winds down, health officials remain vigilant, anticipating a further increase in hospital admissions in the wake of recent gatherings. Charilaou’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of public health measures, especially during the winter months when seasonal infections are prevalent.
