According to figures released by the Statistical Service (Cystat), the Turnover Value Index of retail trade, excluding motor vehicles, increased by 4.6 per cent in November 2025 compared to the same month in 2024. Moreover, the Turnover Volume Index rose significantly by 7.6 per cent.

Utilising 2021 as the base year, the aggregated value index for retail trade reached 145.4, while the volume index hit 132.1. This positive trend is further illustrated by the cumulative growth recorded over the January to November period, where retail trade saw a 6.2 per cent rise in value and a 7.8 per cent increase in volume compared to the previous year.

Cyprus retail: Food and Beverages Lead the Way

Among the various categories, food, beverages, and tobacco in specialised stores stood out, with a striking 17.4 per cent increase in value, bringing it to 162.9. The volume for this category surged by 22.5 per cent to 136.4, indicating a strong preference for these items among consumers.

Supermarkets and Fashion on the Rise

Supermarkets also benefited from this consumer enthusiasm, with value increasing by 5.3 per cent to 142.2 and volume rising by 8 per cent to 122.9. Meanwhile, the clothing and footwear sector continued to thrive, posting a value increase of 4.8 per cent to 167.6 and a volume increase of 14.1 per cent to 171.4.

Electronics and Household Goods Experience Growth

Notably, information and communication equipment saw significant advancement, with value climbing 6 per cent to 173.5 and volume increasing 15.2 per cent to 211.6. Other household equipment, encompassing construction materials and furniture, also reported moderate growth, rising 4.3 per cent in value to 150.9 and 6.2 per cent in volume to 138.4.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products Hold Steady

The pharmaceuticals, orthopaedic goods, and cosmetics sector maintained steady performance, with a 4.7 per cent rise in value to 154.6 and a 3 per cent increase in volume to 143.5. Additionally, sales of flowers, plants, watches, jewellery, optical goods, and second-hand goods experienced growth, with value up 7.3 per cent to 155.6 and volume increasing 5.1 per cent to 129.4.

Challenges for Cultural and Recreation Goods

In contrast, cultural and recreation goods faced a slight decline, with a 1.3 per cent decrease in value to 123.9 and a 1.5 per cent drop in volume to 112.1. This downturn highlights shifting consumer priorities as spending patterns evolve.

Online Retail Faces Contraction

Retail sales conducted online and through mail-order channels recorded the steepest contraction, with value plummeting 13.7 per cent to 118.1 and volume decreasing by 12 per cent to 111.2. Despite this decline, the year-to-date figures remain positive, reflecting resilience in other areas of retail.

Fuel Sales Decline

Automotive fuel sales also took a hit, with a 5.8 per cent fall in value to 112.6 and a 3.6 per cent drop in volume to 101.7. Nonetheless, retail trade excluding automotive fuel witnessed a healthy increase, rising by 5.6 per cent in value and 8.7 per cent in volume.

Looking at broader trends, edible goods saw a value rise of 7.1 per cent to 144.8 and an increase of 10.1 per cent in volume to 124.5. Non-edible goods also saw a gain, with a 4 per cent increase in value to 154.2 and a 7.5 per cent rise in volume to 148.1.
