firecracker attack — Police are searching for a motorcyclist following a firecracker attack on the home of artist George Gavriel in Kokkinotrimithia. This incident has drawn attention as Gavriel had recently exhibited his artwork at a gallery in Paphos, which led to him becoming a target for threats.

  • Initially, there were reports suggesting that two individuals were on the scooter, but further analysis of the video confirms that the perpetrator acted alone.

In the days leading up to the attack, Gavriel reported receiving numerous threats after images of his work were shared publicly. A video recorded by Gavriel himself captured the moment when a lone motorcyclist arrived at his residence shortly after nightfall. The footage shows the rider stopping with the engine running, igniting two paper Easter firecrackers, and throwing them towards the house before fleeing the scene. The entire episode lasted around 10 seconds.

Initially, there were reports suggesting that two individuals were on the scooter, but further analysis of the video confirms that the perpetrator acted alone.

The Nicosia CID is actively investigating the attack. Gavriel has provided a statement detailing his experience during the incident, noting that he heard the explosion while inside his home with his wife and children, causing them brief panic. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The police described the firecrackers used in the attack as factory-made with low-power pyrotechnic composition, indicating that the intent was likely to intimidate rather than to cause harm. These types of firecrackers are commonly employed by young people during festive occasions, such as football matches or Easter celebrations. The minor explosion did not leave any significant damage, not even a crater.

In response to the threats and the attack, police have implemented protective measures for Gavriel and his family. Investigators are also trying to trace the motorcycle’s route and are reviewing local CCTV footage to identify the scooter, its license plate, or any other clues that could lead to the suspect’s identification.

Additionally, pyrotechnicians have collected evidence from the scene to trace the origin of the firecrackers, although it is noted that a vast number of similar devices are widely available among young people.
