Concerns are mounting over the alarming rise in membership of a neo-Nazi group among students at Vergina Lyceum in Cyprus, with figures reportedly reaching into the triple digits. Loizos Constantinou, President of the Pancyprian Confederation of Parents’ Associations of Secondary Education, revealed that some members have even travelled to Greece to connect with extremist organisations.
Neo-nazi group: Visible Extremism on Campus
Reports indicate that the group’s activities have been apparent within the school for over two years, prompting serious questions about the administration’s awareness and response. Swastikas have been repeatedly spotted on school walls, and several students have been seen making Nazi salutes in public posts. An Instagram account named “Verginazi” has further illuminated the troubling nature of this group.
Intimidation and Threatening Atmosphere
Recent complaints highlight a climate of intimidation at Vergina Lyceum. Allegations have surfaced that members of this neo-Nazi group were involved in a violent incident at Finikoudes, where they reportedly threw stones at students participating in a protest against the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus. These developments have raised alarm bells among parents and educators alike.
Parent and Community Outcry
Mr Constantinou described the students’ actions as deeply concerning, emphasising that this is not merely a phase of youthful rebellion but a well-organised movement that poses a significant threat. “A climate of terror prevails among the other children,” he stated, urging immediate action from the Ministry of Education and the school’s administration. He expressed frustration over what he deemed negligence, questioning how swastikas could remain on school property for months without being addressed.
Official Investigations Underway
In response to the growing public outcry, the Ministry of Education has dispatched a District Inspector to Vergina Lyceum. Giorgos Koutsides, the Deputy Director of Secondary Education, confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the extent of student involvement and whether connections to extremist groups exist. He noted that the situation is being treated with seriousness, and if evidence of external influences arises, police involvement will be considered.
Community Leadership Responds
The Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, has also voiced his concerns, stressing the need for immediate measures to address the issue. He highlighted the historical dangers associated with such ideologies, insisting that these matters should not be dismissed due to the young age of the individuals involved.
