electric vehicles — electric vehicles — Cyprus is witnessing a remarkable surge in electric and hybrid vehicles, with significant growth reported between January and November 2025. According to recent figures published by the state statistical service, Cystat, the rise in these eco-friendly vehicles is outpacing traditional petrol and diesel models.
Electric vehicles: Strong Growth in Overall Vehicle Registrations
In November 2025, total motor vehicle registrations reached 4,172, reflecting an 8.4 per cent increase compared to 3,850 registrations in November 2024. This trend signals a broader shift towards sustainable transport options across the island.
Passenger Saloon Cars on the Rise
Passenger saloon car registrations saw a notable increase of 9.4 per cent, climbing to 3,195 from 2,920 in the same month last year. Across the eleven-month period, total motor vehicle registrations rose by 4.5 per cent, reaching 48,904 compared to 46,780 during the corresponding period of 2024.
Shift Towards Cleaner Powertrains
A striking aspect of this report is the increasing market share of electric and hybrid vehicles. Electric cars grew their share from 4 per cent in 2024 to 4.7 per cent in 2025. However, hybrid cars outperformed this growth dramatically, expanding from 36.9 per cent to an impressive 44.3 per cent. This remarkable shift indicates that nearly half of all passenger saloon registrations are now hybrid vehicles.
Decline in Traditional Fuel Models
The move towards greener options has also resulted in a decline in petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. The share of petrol saloon cars fell to 42.3 per cent in the first eleven months of 2025, down from 48.9 per cent the previous year. Diesel vehicles also saw a decrease, dropping to 8.8 per cent from 10.1 per cent in 2024.
Significant Changes in Vehicle Types
The report also highlighted increases in other vehicle types. Motor coaches and buses registered a rise to 172 from 127 in the same period last year. Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 6.3 per cent, reaching 5,694 compared to 5,355 in 2024. Notably, rental saloon cars surged by 22.4 per cent to 5,052.
Rising Popularity of Two-Wheelers
In the realm of two-wheelers, motorcycles above 50cc experienced a 16.6 per cent growth, reaching 4,264 registrations. This is a positive sign for the motorcycle market, contrasting sharply with the decline in mopeds under 50cc, which fell dramatically from 657 to just 197.
A Market in Transition
The trends outlined in Cystat’s report underscore a transformative period for Cyprus’s automotive market, heavily influenced by the rise of electric and hybrid vehicles. The increasing adoption of these cleaner powertrains signifies a collective shift towards sustainability, reshaping the preferences of Cypriot consumers.
