Serious crime: Solving Rates Decline
The overall rate for solving serious crimes in Cyprus stands at 77.78 per cent this year, a slight drop from the 81.29 per cent recorded in 2022. The minister indicated that drug-related offences are included in these statistics, reflecting a broader struggle with narcotics on the island.
Property Crimes and Challenges
Hartsiotis noted that the lowest solving rates have been observed in cases involving property damage through explosives, arson, and theft. These areas of crime are particularly challenging for law enforcement.
Police Response and Technological Upgrades
Addressing concerns about the police force’s capabilities, Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis acknowledged the difficulties faced in upgrading technological systems. He disclosed that he has sought assistance from the finance minister, who has responded positively to his request for guidance on acquiring specialised services. This indicates a recognition of the need for enhanced expertise within the police force to effectively tackle rising crime rates.
