free tree — The forestry department is making a significant move against climate change by providing free tree saplings to public bodies and residents. With the planting season approaching, this initiative aims to invigorate tree planting efforts throughout Cyprus.

Free tree: Planting for the Climate Initiative

Between November and February, the department will distribute up to 100,000 saplings, valued at €250,000, under the ‘planting for the climate’ initiative. This ambitious plan is designed to contribute towards the national objective of planting one million new trees by 2030.

A Broader European Commitment

This initiative is part of a larger commitment by the European Union, which aims to plant three billion trees by the same deadline. To track the progress made since 2019, the forestry department has developed a comprehensive database.

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants for these free saplings include local authorities, schools, government services, churches, and organised groups or citizen initiatives that have suitable planting sites. If demand from these groups is insufficient, up to half of the available saplings will be allocated to individual residents. Furthermore, saplings grown in containers larger than three litres may also be provided at no cost.

Application Process

Applications for the saplings are open from October 8 to November 7. Interested parties can submit their requests at a local forestry station, via email, or online through the department’s official website. It is encouraged that municipalities collaborate with local groups to facilitate the application process.
