Cyprus retail: Retail Performance Indicators

The Turnover Value Index, which excludes motor vehicles, climbed to 139.7, reflecting an annual increase of 4.9% and a year-to-date rise of 6.2% from January to August 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The Turnover Volume Index also saw a significant uptick of 8.4%, indicating a substantial rise in physical sales during the same timeframe.

These indices use 2021 as a base year, where an average turnover index of 100.0 represents the baseline. For example, a monthly turnover index reading of 105.3 signifies a 5.3% increase over the average monthly turnover of 2021. Cystat calculates the Turnover Value Index at current prices, while the Turnover Volume Index is adjusted for inflation using the consumer price index.

Sector Highlights

Among the notable performers in the retail sector, sales of flowers, plants, watches, jewellery, optical goods, and second-hand goods surged, with a remarkable annual increase of 11.9%, marking a value index of 235.8. Similarly, specialised stores for food, beverages, and tobacco experienced a 12.4% growth, reaching a value index of 145.6.

Sales outside traditional retail spaces also grew, with a 9.2% rise, culminating in a value index of 96.9.

Volume Increases Across Categories

In terms of volume, the specialised stores for food, beverages, and tobacco saw a striking growth of 16.5%, achieving a volume index of 119.3. Clothing and footwear sales increased by 13.0%, bringing their volume index to 169.0, while retail sales not in stores rose by 10.7%, reaching a volume index of 90.4.

Automotive Fuel Sales Decline

Conversely, automotive fuel sales experienced a downturn, with value dropping by 8.3% to a value index of 113.6 and volume decreasing by 1.0%. However, it’s noteworthy that the year-to-date volume for automotive fuel still shows an overall rise of 3.1%.

Aggregated Retail Trade Metrics

When excluding automotive fuel, the value index for retail trade increased by 6.4%, while non-edible goods recorded a 7.0% rise in value. The corresponding volume indices also demonstrated positive growth, with a 9.4% increase in retail trade excluding automotive fuel and an 8.0% rise for non-edible goods.
