vaccination rights — Pharmacists in Cyprus are pushing for vaccination rights in their pharmacies, a move that the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association has revived amid ongoing discussions in Europe about expanding pharmacy services.
Ploutarchos Georgiades, President of the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association, shared insights with Phileleftheros, stating that the initiative was inspired by a recent meeting in Brussels where European pharmacists deliberated on the services they can offer. Georgiades emphasised that Cypriot pharmacists are not alone in this pursuit; it is a model successfully implemented in various European nations for many years.
Vaccination rights: Pharmacy’s Role in Public Health
Georgiades pointed out that the distribution and number of pharmacies across Cyprus position them well to play a pivotal role in preventive healthcare. He highlighted the potential for neighbourhood pharmacies to become key players in primary health initiatives.
Benefits of Seasonal Vaccinations
Introducing seasonal vaccinations through pharmacies could significantly enhance public compliance with flu vaccination, according to Georgiades. He believes this would alleviate the burden on the General Health System and reduce pressure on personal doctors. “Seasonal vaccination from pharmacies would offer almost complete compliance by the public,” he asserted.
Training and Experience of Pharmacists
Georgiades made a strong case for the capability of pharmacists, noting their extensive training and experience in healthcare settings. “Pharmacists possess the experience and appropriate education to provide vaccination services through neighbourhood pharmacies,” he stated.
Call for Dialogue with Authorities
The Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association is eager to initiate discussions with relevant authorities to facilitate the introduction of vaccination services in pharmacies. Georgiades stressed the urgency of the conversation, saying, “It is imperative that this discussion finally begins in Cyprus.”
The renewed campaign aligns with broader trends in Europe, where vaccination programmes have become a staple service in many pharmacies, enhancing accessibility for citizens. Cypriot pharmacists are confident that their existing training and widespread network can effectively contribute to improving vaccination rates and reducing the strain on the national health system.
