- pyla arson — A 17-year-old has become the sixth arrest in the ongoing investigation into the attempted murder and arson case linked to a car rental company in Pyla.
The arrest occurred on Monday, following a coordinated search operation by police and other authorities in both Nicosia and a nearby village. This operation unearthed a vehicle suspected to be involved in the incident, which took place on August 14.
At approximately 4 am on that fateful day, four cars were set ablaze at the car rental office located along the Larnaca-Dhekelia coastal road. Eyewitness accounts indicate that two individuals arrived at the scene in a vehicle, dousing the cars in flammable liquid before igniting them. While the fires caused significant damage, fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, gunfire was heard by a security guard present at the site during the incident.
As part of the investigation, police have arrested five other suspects, aged 18, 23, 27, and 44, who remain in custody. The latest suspect, the 17-year-old, is alleged to have been in possession of the firearm that was discharged at the security guard. He has been remanded for an eight-day period as investigations continue.
During the recent searches, authorities located the vehicle thought to have been used in the arson, alongside its contents, which are now undergoing forensic analysis. Additionally, a significant haul of class A drugs was discovered at a premises linked to one of the detained suspects. This included 2,170 grams of methamphetamine and 34 grams of cocaine, as well as several firearms, including four pistols and an air rifle.
George Charalambous, head of the Larnaca fire department, reported, “Four pistols were located which at first glance appear to be real, alongside a number of 9mm calibre cartridges and an air rifle with a scope.” These findings have added another layer to the ongoing investigation.
As the police continue to unravel the details of this case, the community remains on edge, aware of the potential risks posed by the individuals involved. The investigation is ongoing, as authorities seek to piece together the events leading up to the arson and attempted murder.
